Karachi AI #5 | Natural Language Processing Special & Uncovering Deep Learning
The Karachi.AI quarterly summit took place on 22nd December 2018 at Usman Institute of Technology, Karachi. One of a kind as it might have been, brought together natural language processing enthusiast and speakers.Co-hosted by DevNCode, Pakistan Ecommerce Consortium & WomenInTech
Fifth in the series, the event started with the founder’s keynote to the audience about organization and its vision, and importance of learning Artificial Intelligence. Under his excellence audience learned about the budding importance of Artificial intelligence and cross domain innovation to put Pakistan in the winning lane forward. Mr. Hemani introduced audience with the event theme and schedule.
Followed by the finest speakers amongst NLP professionals, Mr. Anis Sheikh (Ex-Journalist & Founder of Base H) introduced the audience with NLP 101. His unique ability to captivate audience allowed everyone to delve into the wide paradigm of NLP. Mr. Anis covered introduction to concept and paradigm related, starting from Natural Language Understanding, Processing & Generation. His knowledge stemmed around his own NLG product Dante which is currently incubated at NIC Karachi.
He was replaced by Mr. Umair Hanif one of the youngest speakers and practitioners of NLP. Umair explained the most discussed implementations around NLP and proposed some newer ones with a practical and applied AI approach. The audience was captivated with his story telling ability & grip around his worked projects. He stressed upon importance of Data as a base for artificial intelligence especially around NLP. He currently serves at Penumbra as Data Scientist developing products over NLP including sentiment analysis & text summarization tools.
Karachi.AI is always envisioned to introduce linkage between AI industries and offers them a platform to connect with those who want to learn, as Fetch Sky joined the stage. Mr. Mohammed Raza represented the firm and the renowned product Peekaboo Guru, A lifestyle application that summarizes various discounts & deals in the food & lifestyle. Under his knowledge audience built an intuition around how structured data can help build humungous products that deliver crispier value and experience to the audience. Mr. Raza introduced how Peekaboo Guru uses its location intelligence with NLP to deliver customer support via chatbots. In the last he stunned audience with a fantastic prototype presentation with Google home, where he asked the device to suggest deals and discounts nearby and Google Assistant delivered deals around utilizing Peekaboo Guru’s own proprietary location intelligence database.
It was a splendid moment to have IBM on board at the event. The giant’s already renowned for their hardware joined the stage to introduce the software side of the organization with their flagship product IBM Watson. Mr. Muhammad Ali represented IBM developer group, and introduced the audience around the organization and its background. With a huge momentum built upon the organization itself, Mr. Ali explained how IBM Watson’s natural language processing platform provides value for businesses introducing case studies in anonymity of various client, who serve a huge base of customers. Mr. Ali welcome everybody to utilize and experience the power of platform, by benefiting from inbuilt capabilities of sentiment analysis, extraction of insights from text, context awareness and summarization all available to scale with SaaS model.
As the event matured towards understanding around Natural Language Processing. The Audience were introduced with over hyped concept of Deep Learning which was the theme for second half.
Dr. Ali Shoaib joined the stage to elaborated audience about Deep learning, the audience was already impressed with his technical knowledge around the topic despite being a doctor which was unconventional. Mr. Shoaib explained how deep learning actually works and delivers the most promising solutions around computer vision, natural language processing and recognition. He stressed around the matrix of when to use deep learning, where he illuminated the trade-off between requirements of explain-ability and accuracy, concluding the topic.
Mr. Hassan Khalid came to second Dr. Ali Shoaib’s argument around hype. His experience derives from hands-on exposure as Data Scientist with Love for Data. He stressed around the key metrics that must be weighted before utilizing deep learning as a solution to a problem. He cleared the clouds around deep learning and it’s applicability with regards to explain-ability. Mr. Hassan explained how deep learning is resource intensive and is solution to specific problems rather than a global solution to all problems. The audience was now well aware around the hype of deep learning.
Dinner and Networking session was scheduled right after the awards presented by Dr. Shoaib Zaidi Academic Director – UIT (Chief Guest)
