A lone barbarian reaches a keep, where a supernatural gatekeeper refuses to accept gold and instead demands a story as the price of passage. Her mentor also read from a book whose endings had been torn away so that each story would never truly end. After the gatekeeper allows her through, he reveals that his absent master has left those missing pages behind, turning the lesson from her childhood into a warning about what waits ahead.
