AI Copium examines a US policy debate over whether Chinese open-weight models should face restrictions because of national-security and intellectual-property concerns. Nearly 200 startups argue that blocking those models would remove affordable building blocks they use to compete.
The concern is that restrictions would advantage large frontier labs while making smaller American companies more dependent on a few closed providers. Export controls have also pushed China to develop domestic chips, data centers and models, reducing the leverage those controls were meant to create.
