What is adversarial review?

Definition

An adversarial reviewer examines work with the explicit aim of finding reasons it may be wrong or incomplete. In agent workflows, separate critics can question implementation choices, test evidence or claims of completion against the original specification.

Several reviewers agreeing does not establish correctness, especially when they share the same missing context or assumptions. Useful review requires concrete evidence and follow-up checks rather than treating confident criticism or consensus as a substitute for testing.

Imagine asking someone to look for the weak points in a bridge design before construction begins. Their job is to test the important claims, not simply say that the drawing looks convincing.

For example, a reviewing agent can challenge whether a software patch fixes a leak by tracing the actual resource lifetime. The team then checks that criticism with the original code and a relevant test before accepting or rejecting it.

Must adversarial review be hostile?

No. The aim is constructive scrutiny of evidence and assumptions, not personal criticism.

Do more reviewers guarantee a better result?

No. Review quality depends on relevant evidence and complementary perspectives, while repeated shared mistakes can produce false confidence.
