What is a closed AI model?

Definition

A closed AI model is typically used through a product or controlled application programming interface. The provider chooses who can access it, which capabilities are exposed, what usage is permitted, and when the underlying system changes.

Closed access can help a provider manage deployment and some misuse risks, but users cannot independently inspect or operate the full model. Access restrictions do not by themselves prove that a model is safe, secure, or accurately described.

ELI5

A closed AI model is controlled by a provider that does not release the model weights for customers to run themselves. People normally access it through the provider's app or API.

For example, a company can send requests to a hosted model while the provider operates the hardware, updates and service limits. This can be convenient and well supported, but the customer has less control over deployment, customization and future provider changes.

Can the public use a closed AI model?

Often yes, through an app or API, but the provider controls access and does not supply the complete model for independent operation.

Does closed access automatically make a model safer?

No. It can support some controls, but safety still depends on evaluation, system design, monitoring, governance, and actual behavior.
