What is fraud detection?

Definition

A fraud-detection system can combine transaction history, account behavior and other permitted signals to estimate whether an event deserves investigation. AI models can learn patterns from past outcomes, while rules capture known warning signs.

A risk score is not proof of fraud. False alarms, missed cases, changing behavior and uneven data require careful evaluation, appropriate access controls and a way to review consequential decisions.

ELI5

Fraud detection is a way to spot activity that may be dishonest or unauthorized. It looks for warning signs and asks for closer checking rather than assuming every unusual action is wrong.

For example, a bank might notice a purchase that differs sharply from an account's usual behavior and ask the customer to confirm it. An unfamiliar purchase can still be legitimate, so the warning needs checking.

Does a high fraud score prove wrongdoing?

No. It indicates suspicion based on available signals and can be wrong.

Why do fraud models need ongoing evaluation?

Both legitimate behavior and fraud strategies change, so earlier performance may not describe current results.
