What is hybrid retrieval?

Definition

A hybrid system can combine semantic matching with lexical search, structured indexes or relationship-based retrieval. These methods provide different signals, and the system needs a defined way to select or combine their results.

Combining methods does not automatically improve relevance or reliability. The workflow should test representative queries, handle duplicate or conflicting results and preserve links to the retrieved sources for later verification.

Hybrid retrieval uses more than one way to find information. One method might match words, while another looks for related meaning or recorded connections.

For example, a document search can combine an exact product identifier with a meaning-based query about a problem. The combined result still needs checking to ensure it concerns the right product and actually answers the question.

Must hybrid retrieval use exactly two methods?

No. It can combine multiple retrieval signals, provided their roles and result handling are defined.

Does combining search methods guarantee better results?

No. The combination needs evaluation because poor weighting or conflicting signals can reduce relevance.
