Image editing changes an existing image rather than creating the whole picture from nothing. An editor can replace an object, adjust a color, extend a background, remove a distraction or revise the composition while using the original image as the starting point.
AI image editing makes many of these changes from natural-language instructions or visual guidance. Good results depend on edit control and consistency: the requested area should change, while identities, lighting, perspective and unrelated details should remain stable. Because one change can affect nearby pixels, important outputs still need visual review.
ELI5
Image editing is like revising a picture instead of drawing a completely new one. You point out what should change and what should stay, then the editing tool produces a new version for you to inspect.
For example, you might ask an AI tool to make a blue mug red while keeping the person, table and room unchanged. If the table or lighting also changes, the edit was not as controlled as intended and may need another revision.
