What is memory safety?

Definition

Languages and runtimes can enforce constraints on references, ownership and access to stored values. These protections target classes of low-level defects that can cause crashes, corruption or security problems.

Memory safety does not imply that every program is correct or secure. Unsafe interfaces, external libraries and higher-level logic still require scrutiny, and language guarantees must be distinguished from the behavior of a complete deployed system.

ELI5

Memory safety is making sure a program uses only the storage it is entitled to use and does not keep using a place after it has been given back.

For example, a program should not read past the end of a list into unrelated data. Preventing that mistake does not prove its calculation or business rules are correct.

Does memory safety eliminate every software bug?

No. It addresses specific kinds of invalid memory access, not every logic, permission or data-handling error.

Can external components affect the guarantee?

Yes. Unsafe code and interfaces to other components must be considered when assessing the complete system.

Definition card for memory safety: What is memory safety?

Memory safety prevents software from accessing memory in invalid ways, such as reading outside an allocated region or using data after its storage has been released.
