A mobile manipulator must coordinate navigation, perception and an arm or other mechanism for physical interaction. Moving the base can change what the robot can reach, while object handling can affect balance, planning and safety.
Reliable performance requires the full hardware and software system to work together. A promising model or demonstration does not establish dependable operation across different rooms, objects and real-world disturbances.
ELI5
Mobile manipulation means a robot can travel to a place and then do something with an object there. Moving around and using its arm have to fit together.
For example, a robot might drive toward a table and pick up a cup. It must reach the right position and handle the cup without knocking other things over.
Is mobile manipulation just robot navigation?
No. It also includes physical interaction with objects, which must be coordinated with movement.
Does one demonstration establish general capability?
No. Different environments and objects require representative evaluation of the complete robot system.
