What is network security?

Definition

Controls can include access restrictions, separation between systems, protected communications, monitoring and timely repairs. They address both the services exposed to a network and the infrastructure carrying traffic.

AI can change how threats are discovered or carried out, but basic exposure reduction and operational resilience remain relevant. Effective protection depends on the actual configuration, dependencies and response procedures rather than a single tool.

Network security means protecting the paths and systems that let computers communicate. It involves deciding who may connect, which services are reachable and how problems will be detected and handled.

For example, an organization can keep an internal management service reachable only by authorized staff instead of exposing it publicly. It still needs to check access, maintain the service and plan for connection failures.

Does disconnecting one service solve every risk?

No. Security depends on the broader system, including credentials, dependencies and operational practices.

Is resilience part of network security?

It can be. Maintaining service during disruption and recovering safely complement measures intended to prevent unauthorized activity.
