Tests can inspect software, configuration and behavior against explicit security goals. A controlled demonstration can reveal a weakness, while broader assessment needs representative cases and clear evidence of what was actually tested.
Testing requires authorization and boundaries appropriate to the environment. A result from an intentionally vulnerable local setup does not establish that a different production system has the same weakness or was compromised.
ELI5
Think of checking whether a system's protective rules work as intended in an approved test setting.
For example, a team can use its own test service to check whether information remains available only to the people allowed to read it.
Does one demonstration prove every system is vulnerable?
No. The result applies to the tested conditions, and other systems may differ in software, configuration and controls.
Why define the testing boundary?
It makes clear which systems and actions are authorized and prevents a test from affecting unrelated resources.
