What is soft robotics?

Definition

Soft robots can bend, stretch or change shape rather than relying entirely on rigid links and joints. Designers may use flexible chambers, elastic structures or other deformable components to produce useful movement.

Compliance can help a robot conform to an object or a confined space, but it also complicates control and sensing. A soft body still needs an appropriate design and operating limits; softness alone does not establish safety.

Soft robotics makes machines with parts that can bend or squash. Their flexible bodies help them fit around things in ways stiff machines may find difficult.

For example, a flexible gripper might curl around an oddly shaped object. Its controller still needs to limit the force so it does not squeeze too hard.

Are all parts of a soft robot flexible?

No. A soft robot can combine deformable parts with rigid sensors, electronics or supports. The term describes the functional use of compliance in its design.

Does a soft robot have to move by growing?

No. Growth is one possible design. Other soft robots bend, contract, inflate or deform to grasp objects and move.

Definition card for soft robotics: What is soft robotics?

Soft robotics is the study and design of robots that use flexible or deformable materials as functional parts of their bodies. Their compliance affects how they move, grasp objects and interact with surroundings.
