What is speech-to-speech model?

Definition

Speech-to-speech describes the model's input and output modalities rather than one fixed architecture. Systems can represent speech with learned audio tokens and may also use text as an auxiliary signal.

The approach can support spoken dialogue, but natural delivery does not guarantee correct content. Latency, turn-taking and factual reliability need separate evaluation; the label alone does not establish any model's internal design.

ELI5

A speech-to-speech model listens to spoken sound and produces a spoken response. A smooth-sounding reply can still contain mistakes.

For example, it might answer a spoken question with a friendly voice but invent a detail. The voice quality and the truth of the answer need different checks.

Does speech-to-speech mean no text is used internally?

No. The term describes audio input and output. Some systems also use text during training or generation.

Does natural speech prove understanding or accuracy?

No. Expressive timing and pronunciation are separate from whether a response is correct and consistent.
