What is technical debt?

Definition

Shortcuts, fragile integrations and unclear structure can accumulate obligations that slow later changes. Some debt is a deliberate tradeoff, while other debt arises from missing knowledge or poor execution.

Managing debt requires understanding its actual effects and prioritizing worthwhile repairs. New code or a quick patch does not automatically create debt; the issue is the lasting cost and constraint it introduces.

ELI5

Think of a quick repair that works today but makes the next repair more complicated.

For example, several duplicated implementations may be easy to add initially but require repeated changes and checks whenever the shared behavior needs updating.

Is technical debt always a mistake?

No. A temporary compromise can be reasonable when its costs are understood and managed.

Does generating code faster remove technical debt?

No. Faster production can still create fragile or duplicated code, and the result needs appropriate design and maintenance.
