What is data sovereignty?

Definition

Data sovereignty concerns the legal and organizational control that applies to data based on location and jurisdiction. It affects storage, processing, transfer, access and the providers an organization can use.

AI deployments may address sovereignty by choosing approved regions or running models on controlled infrastructure. Location alone is not enough because access, backups, logs and support operations may also cross boundaries.

ELI5

Data sovereignty means information remains subject to the rules of the place responsible for it. Moving or processing the data in another country can change which laws and organizations have authority.

For example, a business may run an AI model in an approved local data center so customer records stay within the required jurisdiction.

How does data sovereignty affect AI services?

It can determine where prompts, files, outputs, logs and backups may be stored or processed and who may access them.

Does local model hosting automatically satisfy data sovereignty?

No. Organizations must also examine storage, telemetry, support access, backups, transfers and applicable legal requirements.
