Generalization describes how well a learned capability transfers beyond the data and situations used during training. A system generalizes well when it recognizes relevant patterns and performs appropriately on new but related cases.
Strong training results do not guarantee reliable behavior in every new environment. Differences in inputs, incentives, tools, or surrounding conditions can expose weaknesses that were not visible in the original tests.
ELI5
Generalization means using a lesson in a new situation instead of only remembering the practice questions. It shows whether the learner understood the pattern behind the examples.
For example, a system trained to recognize red and green apples should still identify a yellow apple as an apple, even if that exact color was rare in its lessons.
How is generalization tested?
Evaluators use separate examples or environments that were not used for training and measure whether performance remains appropriate.
Can a system generalize on one task but fail on another?
Yes. Generalization depends on the capability, the training experience, and how different the new conditions are.
