What is a model access agreement?

Definition

A model access agreement can cover authorized users, applications, territories, data handling, output use, rate limits, security, pricing, branding, sublicensing, termination, and restrictions on training or distillation. It may govern direct API use or a platform that bundles another provider's models.

The technical ability to call a model does not override the agreement. Ownership changes, competitive conflicts, suspected misuse, or a provider's strategic shift can cause access to be narrowed or ended, so dependent platforms need clear transition and customer-continuity plans.

ELI5

A model access agreement is the rulebook and contract for using another organization's AI model. It explains who may use the service, what they may build with it, how outputs may be handled, what it costs, and when access can end.

For example, a coding platform might be allowed to include a provider's model for its subscribers but forbidden from using the outputs to train a rival model. If the agreement ends, the platform needs another way for users to continue their work.

Frequently asked questions

Can a model provider end platform access?

It depends on the agreement, applicable law, notice requirements, and the circumstances. Platforms should design for a documented loss or change of upstream access.

What technical controls can enforce a model access agreement?

Controls can include scoped credentials, usage limits, audit records, customer identity, output restrictions, anomaly detection, and the ability to revoke or rotate access.
