A ranking process compares candidate items and produces an ordering. The score may reflect relevance, preference or another explicit objective, and the application decides how to use that order.
The highest-ranked item is not automatically correct or appropriate. Ranking quality depends on the chosen criteria, examples and evaluation, while ties, uncertainty and changing conditions may require additional handling.
ELI5
Ranking puts options in an order based on what matters for the task. It answers which items should come earlier, rather than merely assigning each one to a category.
For example, a support system can rank incoming requests by an agreed urgency score. That order helps a team prioritize, but the team still needs to check that the scoring rules reflect real customer needs.
Is ranking the same as classification?
No. Classification assigns categories, while ranking orders candidates according to a criterion.
Does the first result have to be correct?
No. A top rank reflects the scoring method, not a guarantee of factual accuracy or suitability.
