The review separates a language model from the coding harness wrapped around it. Batteries-included tools such as Claude Code and Codex provide large toolsets, workflows and safety prompts, while Pi starts with a much smaller core that users extend for their own environment.
Pi exposes a durable event log, supports OpenAI-compatible endpoints and can add extensions, skills, prompts and themes as needed. That design can suit local models and specialized setups where a large system prompt or fixed workflow consumes too much context or hides how the agent operates.
The flexibility transfers responsibility to the operator. Pi does not include the same default permission prompts, sandboxing or guardrails, so users must isolate it and define what it can access before allowing it to run commands.
