What is capital allocation?

Definition

Capital allocation determines where an organization commits its financial resources. In AI infrastructure, choices may include purchasing hardware, reserving data-center capacity, funding research, developing products, or keeping flexibility for future needs.

The decision is made under uncertainty because demand, prices, energy supply, and algorithmic efficiency can change during a long contract. Too little investment may constrain growth, while too much can create costly unused capacity.

Capital allocation means deciding where money should go. The owner may split it between several choices instead of putting everything in one place.

For example, someone receiving money from company shares might place part in a home, part in a savings account, and part in other investments.

What makes capital allocation difficult?

Organizations must compare uncertain future benefits, costs, risks, timing, and the loss of flexibility across competing options.

How does compute planning affect capital allocation?

Long-term hardware and capacity commitments can consume large amounts of capital before future demand and efficiency are known.
